Cottage Garden, Chiddingfold
This striking new-build home provided a beautiful architectural canvas but lacked the planting needed to soften its clean lines and connect it to the surrounding landscape. The brief was to introduce colour, texture and year-round interest to the front garden, rear borders and a newly created raised bed beneath an established willow tree.
The east-facing front garden combines roses and hydrangeas for long-lasting summer colour, complemented by the dusky tones of delphiniums and Japanese anemones. Evergreen shrubs provide year-round structure, while generous drifts of spring tulips create an early burst of colour before the summer display takes over.
To the rear, the planting shifts towards a woodland character beneath the willow, where thalictrum, hellebores, polemoniums, ferns and shade-tolerant grasses create a rich tapestry of texture and foliage.
Terracotta containers beside the patio provide seasonal interest close to the house, while newly planted hawthorns and a multi-stem Amelanchier bring spring blossom, light structure and year-round beauty to the garden.
